21 things from the 2000s no one should be nostalgic for

The 2000s gave way to a new age: the internet. With that came social media, influencers, and questioning whether one’s aunt had fallen too deep down a conspiracy theory rabbit hole. Of course, the internet isn’t the only thing that really took hold during that time, but it was one of the things that lasted that (arguably) we’re still happy are around. As for some other trends and whatnot, well, these are the things from the 2000s that no one should ever want back in their lives again.

'Jersey Shore'

Love it or hate it, everyone knew about MTV’s reality powerhouse, Jersey Shore. From JWOWW and Snooki to the fist-pumping to the bump-it hairstyle, that show bulldozed its way into the pop culture lexicon, but many can agree that they’re better left in the past and that no one needs to relive that.

All it took was one person in a marketing department to use the word “Xtreme,” and all of a sudden, it was everywhere, even deodorant.

Low-rise jeans

Christina Aguilera was too busy getting “Dirrty” to notice that those low-rise chaps were not the business. Yeah, they looked great on her and were part of an iconic music video, but let’s be real: they were not the least bit comfortable for everyday wear.

The late ‘90s had Austin Powers, and the 2000s had Borat impressions. It was not the greatest time to be alive and well.

While someone’s mom may still be holding on to a flip phone for dear life, it’s time to admit that they were clunky, and texting on them felt like doing Morse code.

Ed Hardy was like Lisa Frank for adult men who wore too much cologne and thought cheesy pickup lines were gold.

Way too many people thought they could play Madison Square Garden because they were good…at a video game.

Bacon obsession

Bacon is great, but the ‘00s made bacon seem like a newfangled invention. Hopefully, today it remains on menus and not on t-shirts, air fresheners, socks, and all the other places it was back then.

Ashton Kutcher has made some not-so-great choices in his career, one of which was making the trucker hat a fashion must-have.

Now that the clips of Fergie have become more memes than musical history gems, it’s time to admit that whatever the Black Eyed Peas did in the 2000s was not the greatest representation of music.

To paraphrase Alyssa Edwards from RuPaul's Drag Race, girl, look how orange you look.

Unless you were a 16-year-old in the jazz band at school, why were you wearing one of those?

The Duggars

Reality TV is here to stay, unfortunately, but at some point, people started to realize that perhaps giving anyone and everyone a series wasn’t the greatest idea, especially when it came to TLC and the Duggars. That family still lives on in the headlines, but it’s time for them just to be a nightmare of a memory.

The real ones remember having to text “40404” when they wanted to send a tweet from their phones because back then, the word apps still were in regard to the buffalo wings people ordered before their meals.

In the 2000s, people were pretending they needed prescription glasses. Let’s hope that one day soon, an anthropologist will do an extensive study on why that was.

Parody movies

The Scary Movie films were great until the Wayans Brothers stepped away. Even Not Another Teen Movie still holds up, but then came a wave of other parody movies that felt like dollar bin knockoffs of the ones that actually took the time to get it right.

Hipsters were people who were “too cool” for popular things but, ironically enough, were following a trend of their own and not the least bit unique.

They were just expensive sweatpants. Let’s just be real about that.

In reality, Cher rocked the heck out of it in 1999 with “Believe,” but come the 2000s, it was everywhere due to T-Pain. Thankfully, even he’s abandoned it and proven that, um, he can actually sing! We love that for him.

Colored ketchup, blue fries, Twinkies with green in the middle for Shrek? It was all too much and too gross.

If someone has a mustache tattooed on their index finger, they were at least 18 in the 2000s, and best believe that they had a wardrobe full of them, too.

Kendra Beltran went to college with no game plan and found herself falling back on her love of writing soon after graduating all the way back in 2009. Since then, she's written for MTV Geek, Cosplay Central, Collider, Apartment Therapy, and many other sites that allowed her to showcase her love of all things pop culture. When she isn't writing, Kendra is either hosting her show, Crushgasm, baking all the cookies, or spoiling her fur baby, Mason.
