Pirates Continue Spring Training Slim Down

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to trim down their spring training roster ahead of opening day, and they announced the latest slate of roster moves following their win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday.

2023 first overall pick Paul Skenes was reassigned to the team’s minor league camp, as were catcher Carter Bins, infielder Sergio Alcantara and outfielders Matt Gorski—who homered against Tampa earlier in the day—and Joe Perez.

The Pirates also assigned right-handed pitcher Kyle Nicolas to Triple-A Indianapolis, bringing the total number of active players remaining in big league camp to 45. They’ll need to trim that number down to 40 ahead of Opening Day on Thursday, March 28, and they’ll also need to finalize their 26-man active roster as well.

Right-handed pitcher Jared Jones is one notable non-roster invitee remaining in the big league camp, as his chances to make the Opening Day roster climb with every passing day.
